heART for ART Very Special Run Medix 2007 is a Charity Run organised by the NUS Medical Society as the first of many events lined up throughout the year...MEDIX 2007.
About Our Beneficiary - Very Special Arts (VSA) Singapore
VSA Singapore seeks to provide people with disabilities with opportunities to access the arts for rehabilitation and social integration.
VSA Singapore's Objectives
1. To promote the educational, rehabilitative and therapeutic benefits of Visual and Performing Arts to the disabled
2. To integrate individuals with disabilities into mainstream society through the Arts
3. To assist individuals with disabilities to obtain financial assistance/independence through Arts-Making
We believe in the mission and vision of this charity in empowering people with disabilities so that they may realize their fullest potential in being useful and contributing members of society.

The Inspiration
The physically and intellectually disabled form an integral part of our society. Though many people actively befriend and interact with them as part of community service participation, few actually see them as a valuable and useful part of the community.
While it is usually second nature for doctors, medical students, and many people to show care and concern for the sick, it is also especially vital for medical students to have the same degree of compassion and love for other sectors of the underprivileged in our community.
As future medical doctors playing an important role in caring for the sick, needy and less fortunate, a group of us felt convicted and driven to highlight the important role that the physically and intellectually disabled play in our society, a group often neglected in terms of their contribution to our lives. In addition to the medical support they receive, we also believe in the therapeutic benefits the disabled gain through arts therapy, which greatly helps in the healing and empowerment process.
Event Aims
1. To raise funds for VSA Singapore's activities and programmes
2. To raise awareness of how the intellectually and physically disabled form an essential and useful part of our community
3. To build a sense of esteem and purpose among the intellectually and physically disabled by acknowledging and appreciating their artwork
4. To promote health and fitness
Making a Difference
For every lap run round the track, money will be raised for VSA Singapore. Proceeds go toward:
- providing grants, scholarships and awards for children, youths and adults with disabilities.
- training for people with disabilities, as well as their teachers, parents, volunteers in art forms adapted for therapy.
- recruiting of special education teachers.
- funding for overseas arts exchange and artist attachment programmes for VSA beneficiaries.
- public education for parents, teachers and volunteers working with people with disabilities.
- selecting and grooming of national delegates with disabilities for regional / international arts events.
- job placement of freelance artists with disabilities for various design, handicraft and entertainment commission projects
